New York City artist Avery Willard produced a lifetime of historically significant work that has remained widely unseen for decades. Photographer, filmmaker, publisher, performer and gay activist Willard included portraits of aspiring and famous actors, musicians and dancers. Willard also did commercial photography and became a staff photographer for the American National Theatre and Academy.
In 1968, under the name Bruce King, he began producing a newspaper, Gay Scene, which he published until 1992. His films include: Leather Narcissus (1965), Salome: The Dance of the Seven Veils (1965), Reflections (1966), and Dream Boy (1966).
His archives, 76 boxes worth, are in the collection of the NY Public Library.
