Extraordinary cabinet card dated 1887, by Pach Bro's, NY.
Beauty, brains and brawn. Unfortunately we don't know his name. The note written in pencil on verso:
Taken by request of Harvard College 1887. Having been Capt of Tug of War team for University and having had record in lifting machine 967 pounds.
3 3/4" x 5 3/4," in very good condition.
-----
The photo of Harvard's Tug of War team practicing in 1888 is not included in the sale. The man on the right looks to be the man on the Cabinet Card.
“The defeat of Harvard’s tug-of-war team by [MIT's] four untrained and inexperienced men is the greatest athletic feat which the Institute has ever accomplished,” The Tech, March 17, 1887. “We take great pleasure in presenting the readers of THE TECH a phototype of our victorious tug-of-war team, which pulled the Harvard University tug-team 2-1/2 inches." |
