    STORY

This sturdy ceramic mug features an example of "trick" or manipulated photography inspired by a Real Photo Postcard c. 1918, (see scan). Long before Photoshop, trick photos were a magical and mysterious thing. The eye may be convinced, but the mind is unsure. Check out The Metropolitan Museum's exhibition: Faking It

These three French soliders have survived WW1 somewhat the worse for wear. You could see it as a statement about the carnage of war, but it seems too lighthearted for that.

              Made in America

This sturdy ceramic mug is inspired by a vintage photo of two men performing a balancing act. It looks like a very difficult thing to do, but if you consider they're on a ship it seems almost miraculous. Certainly a display of unusual strength, dexterity and balance.

The photo itself, with its yellowed tape on the corners, was obviously well-loved by someone.

The guys are so comfortable expressing a casual intimacy as they lie next to each other (and the Coach). And that wonderful curve across the chest of their uniforms creates a pattern that's echoed in the drape of arms over shoulders.
